As real – and badass – as it gets. Planting by the Signs has an ethereal glow like foxfire…
Growing up in rural Kentucky, S.G. Goodman had heard stories about “planting by the signs,” an ancient practice directed by the cycle of the moon.
In early 2023, Goodman rediscovered the idea while reading through a volume from the much revered Foxfire series, a collection of oral histories, crafting traditions and customs of Southern Appalachia. It’s knowledge from nature, wisdom bestowed by the elders and carried into present time like a support system for an unknowable future. This would become the inspiration for Goodman’s third LP, the phenomenal Planting by the Signs, rock powered by roots and memories of small-town life, connected universal experiences like grief, sorrow and fury.
And now, the show you can’t miss. S.G. Goodman performs tomorrow night at Antone’s. Doors at 7 p.m., with Oklahoma-born artist John Calvin Abney opening the show. Surely, the moon says it’s the right time.
